The month of December is full of generosity and community, bringing joy into our lives. Since we were children, we were told stories of Scrooges and Grinches who were selfish and alone. These were grumpy characters who didn’t find happiness until they took part in charity and community. These two aspects of our lives are a big part of what fulfills us. Of course everyone loves to receive gifts, but giving gifts brings an unexpected sort of happiness. And while each of us needs some alone time, spending time together with others gives us meaning.
Not surprisingly, community and generosity are also experiences that God wants for us. God does not need our sacrifices but he brings about maturity and wisdom when we practice giving. God also already has perfect community with himself but invites us to live that way, too, because he knows we need it. And it's something we need all year long—not just during the holiday season.
Let’s use Christmastime to dedicate ourselves to connecting and giving. Let’s celebrate God’s own lovingkindness by expressing love through benevolence and community.
