Making It Real:
PRINCIPLES APPLIED & LIVED OUT:
CALLED TO FOLLOW, October 11th, 2014 Gathering
Faith & Costly Grace
At River Market Community Church we desire to be a group of people plugging into God's Story.
To Plug into God's Story we are to be gospel, mission and community centered. To help us in our journey of becoming centered in such a way, we apply and live out principles and truths found in the Bible.
WHAT is the gospel? Simply, the gospel of grace: We are sinners saved by Jesus' works and not our own works for relationship with God.
Principles Applied & Lived Out- Becoming Centered:
YOUR GOAL IS TO FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING OVER THE NEXT COUPLE WEEKS
To change things up a little, here is a creative narrative gleamed off the Matthew 8:23-27:
It was a raging storm, the sky dark and conquering, the wind fierce and howling, drawing the sea into a frenzy with crashing waves challenging the competency of the boats maker. On the boat is a group of men soaked to the bone, shivering with coldness and a fear that has crept up on them. The terror started with a few and multiplying itself and overcoming each man leaving one option for their survival. As the boat continues to rock about violently, they look at Jesus sleeping peacefully and a small swell of hope begins to rise in their hearts just as the waves had at the approach of the storm. The disciples rush to his side filled with a mixture of emotions, awaken him, uttering something out of terror that reveals their ignorance of life and of Jesus.
Jesus awakens with a slight annoyance as any man who is raised from his slumber prematurely. He addresses the disciples utterance of ignorance, standing up in the middle of the storm as the rain falls, the wind cuts, waves smashing with the boat quaking. Upright, in the middle of the frey, he boldly commands the raging storm to "Stop! Shut up!" As a flash of lighting cutting through the sky, everything became still. Calmness rang out and silence invaded.
The disciples are tweaked on the adrenaline coursing through their veins and in this instant as the storm stops they clearly see Jesus. It is a miracle that transpires as their hearts and minds are freed from the dark clouds of fear and doubt which had held them captive. The men remain in a state of shock and awe which shifts from a storm of impending doom to the realization that they are in fact alive and stand in the presence of a Man who has authority and power of not just this world but the next.
...THE ART OF FAITH & HELPING OTHERS IN STORMS...
“Faith, in the sense in which I am here using the word, is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted, in spite of your changing moods.” ― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
-WE EXIST Through and For the Gospel
The gospel is a message of good news that is clearly laid out in the Bible, God's word; so the church must be word-centered. It is a word that transforms us, moves through us and rings out into our communities.
-WE LIVE On A Mission
The gospel is a missional word; so the church must be mission-centered.
-WE ARE In and Through Community
The gospel is people focused; it creates the Church and the Church is a family that is community-centered.
To help us wrestle with God's Word and engage as a community, answer these questions prior to the next Saturday evening worship gathering.
Making It Real
This application piece is a follow-up to each Saturday evening sermon. We typically discuss assignments at the Missional Community Gatherings.
