At River Market Community Church we desire to be a group of people plugging into God's Story.
To Plug into God's Story we are to be gospel, mission and community centered. To help us in our journey of becoming centered in such a way, we apply and live out principles and truths found in the Bible.
WHAT is the gospel? Simply, the gospel of grace: We are sinners saved by Jesus' works and not our own works for relationship with God.
Principles Applied & Lived Out- Becoming Centered:
YOUR GOAL IS TO FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING OVER THE NEXT COUPLE WEEKS
When we came together and looked at this section of scripture we saw a new type of authority emerge in which had not been displayed to mankind. In the gospel story, we see Jesus having an authority that gives grace, freedom, forgiveness of sins, healing and love. Jesus' authority is in stark contrast to man's authority which is usually geared toward man's own power, control and benefit.
Jesus sees a people who have faith in him. In response, Jesus heals a man and then does the unthinkable; he forgives a man's sins. The people who had religious authority at the time were outraged but everyone else was in awe and praised God. We discussed the history of christianity and recognized that ever since Jesus died and rose from the dead that mankind has often done a disservice with his influence on religion setting up systems of control and manipulation. Mankind has taken the gospel of grace that which is freedom, forgiveness, healing and love & used it for man's own power, control and benefit.
But this is not the way of Jesus and it is not the gospel. Many people reject Jesus not because of Jesus but because of his followers. They see religion tainted with man's authority and not a people in relationship with God. They don't see people who love God and love others. However, looking at the authority of Jesus and the gospel we find great hope for us individually and the Church moving forward.
As we continued in the scriptures, we saw Jesus choose and invite a man that everyone hated and rejected to follow him. This man named Matthew accepted the invite, left everything behind and decided to throw a party to have the people he knew come and meet Jesus. Matthew's life would never be the same and finds out that following Jesus is the greatest adventure he could fathom.
...THE ART OF FOLLOWING & KICKIN IT...
“Did you ever know a holy man but a wicked man for his comrade, and his heart's darling?" -W.B Yeates, in his play 'The Cat and the Moon'
"The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." -Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter. Fear God and keep his commandments(love God and others), for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, wheather it is good or evil." Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
-WE EXIST Through and For the Gospel
The gospel is a message of good news that is clearly laid out in the Bible, God's word; so the church must be word-centered. It is a word that transforms us, moves through us and rings out into our communities.
-WE LIVE On A Mission
The gospel is a missional word; so the church must be mission-centered.
-WE ARE In and Through Community
The gospel is people focused; it creates the Church and the Church is a family that is community-centered.
To help us wrestle with God's Word and engage as a community, answer these questions prior to the next Saturday evening worship gathering.
